Though sometimes our performance ambitions extend beyond the practical limits of our pocketbooks, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a great pair of shoes in which to do your racing and training. With just a few economical modifications, the Pearl Izumi Tri Fly V Triathlon Shoes bring you the great comfort and performance of the Carbon version at a much reduced price.
If comfort is high on your list of must-haves in a tri shoe, then the Tri Fly V will be perfect. Bucking the trend to have the straps close toward the bike, Pearl Izumi gives you what they call their 1:1 Anatomic TRI Closure. It is an extra wide upper strap that has a large hook-and-eye function, but pulls the strap away from the bike with such a wide surface area that it will eliminate hotspots so typical with tightly, hastily drawn straps by removing unwanted pressure from your forefoot. And if you are racing with bare feet, you won’t have to worry about blistering from friction since the uppers are fully lined to provide a comfy place for your tootsies, while a lot of mesh is interspersed to keep the air moving, and your toes ventilated. The SELECT Insoles provide excellent longitudinal and transverse arch support for those transition points where you will be on-foot for a few meters, pushing-off.
The soles are where the cost savings come in, but without sacrificing overall performance. Made from a nylon composite, you will still get the same support and focus on power transfer that you would expect from the top of line version. The sole receives a special concave shaping to result in an ultra-low 7.0mm stack height, keeping your point of power as close as possible to the spindle. They’ve also added Direct-Vent technology which are discrete openings in the bottom of the soles to drain excess water and provide ventilation for those hot summers in Hawaii. The heel bumper is replaceable, so you won’t have to worry about scratching it beyond repair in those hectic transfer moments.
The Pearl Izumi Tri Fly V Triathlon Shoes will get you into racing shape without straining your checkbook. Their three-bolt cleat configuration makes them compatible with SPD-SL cleats, as well as just about any pedal out there that works with a three-bolt cleat. But cleverly they are also drilled to offer a two-bolt option that will accommodate SPD or any two-bolt mountain bike pedal.
