The Express Commuter is a new direction for Evo Cycle Works, and represents a growing trend toward bicycle commuting in the United States. The client was moving to the Washington DC area from California, and wanted an all-weather commuter bike for functional and recreational use. With no intention of owning a car, this bicycle became his wheels.
We began with a disc brake 7005 aluminum hybrid frame and heavy duty carbon fork, added a triple sealed Ritchey Pro headset, sealed bearing FSA RD 460 disc wheels, Velo Orange fenders and 32c Michelin City tires for summer and fall. In the winter we will swap in a set of Schwalbe Marathon 700x35c studded tires to conquer the icy, slushy roads typical in this part of the country. For night riding, the bike will light up with full tire reflective strips and Fiks Hexalite reflector frame strips on the downtube, front and rear, and rechargeable Nite Rider head and tail lights.
But the disc brakes and hybrid drive system really make this bike stand out. The Avid BB7 road disc brakes are smooth as silk and completely immune to weather conditions, while the drivetrain combines precision Sram Rival Powerglide cranks in the front with a wide range 11-32t cassette and hardy X5 rear derailleur in the rear. Shifting is controlled by a pair of 10 speed Sram X5 trigger shifters for unparalleled dependability.
