Giant is one of the world's leading bike manufacturers, making a huge range of bikes. It places a lot of emphasis on the development of technology for female riders, and it has a strong racing pedigree. It is award-winning, and has introduced technological advances down through the years that have changed cycling forever.
The company was founded in Taiwan and it is still based there, although it also has manufacturing facilities in China and the Netherlands. In its first years it manufactured lightweight, high quality bicycles that were sold under other brands names, but they soon started to develop Giant as a brand in its own right. This was accelerated when its largest customer, Schwinn, who once accounted for 75 percent of Giant’s sales, decided to move manufacturing away from Giant to the China Bicycle Company.
Giant now manufactures over six million bikes a year, selling them in 50 different countries. Many of those bikes are sold under the Giant brand name, but the company also makes bikes for brands such as Trek, Scott and Colnago. It also sells a range of cycling clothing including jackets, eyewear, hydration packs, footwear, helmets, gloves, and more. You can also get gear that’s branded with their main road racing team, Team Giant-Alpecin. Bike parts and accessories are also available.
Giant isn't just known for its prolific bicycle manufacturing, however. It has also been responsible for a number of technical and product advances, including in carbon fibre frames. In fact it was one of the first bicycle manufactures to bring carbon fibre to the general public by making the frames affordable - the first such model was the Cadex 980 C.
It has also led the way in suspension technology, winning awards for its Maestro Suspension system, and in bike designs for women.
Giant produces a wide range of bicycles from those suitable for the casual rider up to those that compete in world-class competitions. It makes bikes for adults and children, and has a special range for women called Liv that has introduced ground breaking technologies to the female bike market.
The main categories of bike that Giant produces are:
Road bikes - including high specification competition bikes, triathlon bikes, TT bikes, and endurance bikes
Mountain bikes- race mountain bikes, gravity, trail and hybrid
Cyclocross bikes - including an adventure and endurance range
Hybrid bikes - including fitness, city, and folding options
Children's bikes - including first bike, BMX, trail, and competition options
Giant is involved in a number of racing teams including Team Giant-Alpecin, the men's road racing team that competes in races including the three Grand Tours: the Tour de France, the Giro, and the Vuelta. It is also involved in the Rabobank Development Team, a team for up-and-coming racers in men's cycling.
Giant also has an involved in two professional women's road racing teams - Team Liv-Plantur and Rabobank-Liv Team. In other disciplines it supports triathlon riders, and it runs the Giant Factory Off-Road Team which competes in a number of off-roading disciplines including mountain bike, downhill, enduro, and XC.
