From the sunny streets of San Diego, Calif., Electra brings a laid-back attitude to cycling. Founder Benno Bänziger founded Electra in 1993 after observing the fact that “everything was some kind of sport.” Bänziger wanted to change this by introducing a bike that offered a practical, affordable and fun method of transportation. He pooled money with Jeano Erforth, and the two created a line of original urban bikes with character and soul.
Now a well-established brand, Electra has expanded their line to include six unique models, each with its own urban style, as well as several child-specific bikes. Today, Electra cruiser bikes and their kin can be purchased in Europe, Japan, Australia and the United States, along with a host of accessories that allow Electra owners to turn their bikes into unique canvases of self-expression.
Speaking of expression, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a bike anywhere with as much style as the collection from Electra. Each bike’s shape combines elements from classic bike design with hot-rod characteristics such as the metal flake paint and white wall tires available on certain Townie models or the European modernist design of the Ticino line.
There’s more to Electra bikes than just stylish looks. The folks at Electra have put special effort into developing a new geometry that is nimble and easy to ride. Commonly referred to as “crank-forward” design, Electra bikes place the rider in a stance that allows them to reach the ground while in the saddle, for excellent low-speed maneuverability. When it’s time to accelerate, the rider is still able to achieve full leg extension by standing.
You don’t have to be a professional cyclist to ride an Electra, and that’s exactly how they like it. Let’s take a look at some of the Electra models available on BikeExchange:
